Big C and the Velvet Delta

bigc300A signature musical moment in our town is a Big C (Clarence Cameron) rendition of Big-Legged Woman. I’ve heard the performance three times now, and I can’t wait for the next one. Clarence and his band will be at Hendershot’s this Friday evening beginning at 8 p.m. We’ve known them for awhile as Big C and the Ringers, but a name change goes into effect officially on Friday night. They’ll be Big C and the Velvet Delta. Sweet!

Christian Lopez at the Shot

resize01Heads up, folk fans. Christian Lopez of Curley Maple takes the stage at Hendershot’s on Friday, February 3, to serve up original acoustic folk goodness. His bandmate Noel Blackmon will join him, as will songwriter Craig Breaden. Curtain around 8 p.m.

A Foggy Day in Athens Town

A gentle fog softened the morning in our town, putting me in mind of an evening not too long ago at Hendershot’s. Carl Lindberg was on stage with his stand-up bass. I don’t remember who was with him. He sang the Gershwins’ “A Foggy Day” with the laid-back, slightly gravelly, soulful authenticity that has charmed Athens audiences almost forever. I asked him to sing it again at our jam session on the twenty-ninth. You’ll have a chance to hear Carl, along with Seth Hendershot himself on drums and Jason Fuller on keys next week on Thursday when the “Old Skool Trio” performs at the Shot. And I’m hoping Carl can make it to our next open jazz jam at the Shot on Groundhog Day, February 2.
